Compared to prednisone, how long could Laverdia extend longevity?
LAVERDIA-CA1 may improve lymphoma patients outcomes by 50% more than prednisone alone, with median duration of 71 days. Some patients remain on LAVERDIA-CA1 for more than 9 months.
Can Laverdia be used for all breeds and all ages of dogs with lymphoma?
All breeds of dogs can take LAVERDIA-CA1. The youngest dog in clinical studies was 7 months of age.
What if you have a case of probable lymphoma, but the owner does not wish to pursue further diagnostics.
LAVERDIA-CA1 is conditionally approved for the treatment of canine lymphoma. A clinical diagnosis of lymphoma is required to be on-label.
What criteria would you use to select Laverdia alone vs. Laverdia w/prednisone for a patient?
For patients who may later receive chemotherapy, prescribe LAVERDIA-CA1 alone to avoid drug resistance associated with prednisone. Clinical studies have shown dogs receiving LAVERDIA-CA1 and low-dose prednisone, 0.5 mg/kg/day, can experience clinical benefits ranging from 2 - 9 months.
Will SINE inhibitors be effective in treating other canine cancers?
LAVERDIA-CA1 is conditionally approved by the FDA to treat canine lymphoma. Anivive is currently collaborating on several in vitro and clinical trial studies looking at the efficacy against other cancer cell lines such as multiple myeloma, transitional cell carcinoma, and osteosarcoma.
Is it safe to try for other cancer types,?
Under the conditional approval it can only be prescribed for treating lymphoma in dogs. Refer to the package insert for complete safety information.
Can Laverdia be given prior to administering CHOP?
LAVERDIA-CA1 can be given prior to administering CHOP. LAVERDIA-CA1 is not a substrate of p-glycoprotein and therefore not subject to multidrug resistance. For patients waiting to see a veterinary oncologist, LAVERDIA-CA1 may help control further advancement of lymphoma until chemotherapy can start.
Can Laverdia be given to canine lymphoma patients before they get to the oncologist and not interfere with treatment?
LAVERDIA-CA1 would be preferred in that setting as it would not be associated with subsequent resistance to CHOP.
Is Laverdia recommended for dogs that come out of remission after CHOP?
LAVERDIA-CA1 can be used in the setting of relapse. We are also looking at its effects as a maintenance therapy in dogs in remission at the completion of CHOP.
If a 11-year-old Boxer diagnosed with mediastinal lymphoma has been on prednisone for at least a month, is it worth adding in Laverdia?
There is no contraindication to using LAVERDIA-CA1 in conjunction with prednisone (see Phase II study). Refer to the package insert for complete safety information.
Can Laverdia be used for cutaneous lymphoma patients?
Yes, LAVERDIA-CA1 is conditionally approved for use in the treatment of lymphoma in dogs, which would include cutaneous lymphoma. Another protocol many oncologists and dermatologists are using is a combination of prednisone, CCNU, and LAVERDIA-CA1.
If you have a patient that is not going to be able to do a referral and is not clinical yet but we can diagnose lymphoma on cytology, would you recommend starting prednisone first and then add Laverdia if needed later? Or would you start both at the same time if they are able?
Use LAVERDIA-CA1 in conjunction with low-dose prednisone, 0.5 mg/kg/day
Is Laverdia given until pet is in "remission"?
LAVERDIA-CA1 may be given as long as patient is tolerating drug and receiving benefit.
If a client can’t afford Laverdia, what do you recommend as regards prednisone... if oncology appointment isn't available for a few weeks?
Given the dog would likely progress to the point of euthanasia within 3 weeks with no treatment, it would be prudent to start prednisone. However, if an owner can afford CHOP, there should be no financial burden to use LAVERDIA-CA1.
What’s your thoughts on updating vaccines (rabies, DHLPP, Bordtella, etc.) on pets that have lymphoma?
In general we would restart vaccines 1-2 months after stopping therapy.
Are there any contradictions for using Laverdia in a dog with pre-existing cardiac disease?
There are no reported contraindications of using LAVERDIA-CA1 in dogs with pre-existing cardiac disease. Refer to the package insert for complete safety information.
Are there examples of lymphoma patients that should not use Laverdia?
Dogs not able to tolerate oral medications. Refer to the package insert for complete safety information.
Does Laverdia help as a rescue drug?
Yes, dogs receiving LAVERDIA-CA1 in clinical studies who had progressed during or relapsed following chemotherapy showed clinical benefits ranging from 21 days to 214 days
Would you recommend using Laverdia right after finishing CHOP or would you wait for signs of release?
Studies in man are currently being performed to address this issue and we will also be evaluating this approach in dogs.
In cases of low grade single node lymphoma, I normally take a wait-and-see approach to avoid side effects of prednisone. Would it be better to start Laverdia?
Consultation with an oncologist is recommended. If this is truly a single node lymphoma, surgery may be indicated. If surgery is not felt to be an option, low-dose prednisone (0.5 mg/kg/day) and LAVERDIA-CA1 would be appropriate.
